Wollstonecraft Society Lecture 2022
At the second annual Wollstonecraft Society Lecture, on 03 May 2022, Helena Kennedy QC delivered a powerful and moving account of the evacuation of Afghan women judges following the fall of Kabul in 2021.
As the Taliban regained control, many women—especially those who had stood up for justice—became immediate targets. Kennedy described the chaos and fear as “death lists” circulated, and women judges, once respected figures in society, faced life-threatening danger.
But amid the tragedy, there were also incredible acts of courage. Kennedy shared the behind-the-scenes efforts to help these women escape, revealing stories of bravery, quick action, and international solidarity. Her own involvement in their rescue brought a deeply personal touch to the evening.
The event was chaired by LSE Professor of Anthropology Alpa Shah and the writer and Wollstonecraft Society Chair Bee Rowlatt, also the senior judge in Afghanistan's Supreme Court Fawzia Amini joining the discussion.
